Governor Tanko Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to declare as a national event, the agricultural show held in the state annually.
The governor who represented all the state governors in the country made the appeal recently at the 7th National Agricultural Show in Tudun Wada, Nasarawa State.
He said that the agricultural show which is organized yearly by the National Agricultural Foundation of Nigeria, NAFN, also needed to be supported by the federal government in the area of infrastructure development of the venue.
Governor Al-Makura lauded various policies and programmes of the federal government under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda and pledged the support of all the state governors.
“We will support the policies and programmes of the federal government aimed at promoting agricultural production and food security,” he pledged on behalf of his colleagues.
The governor disclosed that Nasarawa State government has put in place various policies and programmes to assist farmers in boosting food production and processing.
He cited the partnership between the state and Japan International Cooperation Agency, JAICA, in a pilot project for rice processing and marketing as one of such agricultural programmes.
Al-Makura recalled that during the launching of the 2013 cropping season in the state in May this year, he charged all and sundry to go back to the farm.
“I’ve already secured a backyard farm which I tend after office hours”, the governor stated.
